My name is Matilda. I am an artist and graphic designer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am and have always been a dreamer and seeker of stories and have made it my mission in life to find beauty in all that surrounds me and create accordingly.

I studied Graphic Design and after completing my design degree I ventured into teaching art. Even though I loved teaching, my heart and hands longed to make and create again, so soon after completing my teacher’s diploma, I ended up back in the world of advertising and design. In 2016 I decided it was time to go on my own creative adventure and Hello it’s Matilda was born. I have since rediscovered my love for painting and have been practicing the art of brush lettering and pointed pen calligraphy – there is something romantic about writing with ink, it reminds me of old school love letters. Making and creating has been a natural part of my life since I can remember. As a maker and creator, I am committed to constantly evolve my skills and to never stop learning.

Hello it’s Matilda is where I get to create. I love working in watercolour, ink or gouache and I am constantly exploring new mediums. I am inspired by my surroundings, people, places and the intricate details and colours found in nature and try to remind myself as often as I can to pause and examine them up close. I have a deep love and appreciation for flowers and often incorporate it into my work.

In every culture and throughout history, flowers have been a part of people’s lives in some way or another. “When we hope or pray, love or mourn; we do it with flowers in our hands.” – Mandy Kirby.
